Though lots of Juniors used 2 stroke engines, the FIA, in their wisdom banned 2 stroke F1 cars because they decided that if some-one developed one of these it would be too powerful and fast...........

Spoke with Steve Owen about importing one of these snowmobile engines and CVT boxes about 2.5yrs ago, with the idea of putting one in an OMS. He said they had already tried it and it was not so successful, but that was some time ago.

The engine I was considering at the time was a Bombardier (SkiDoo) 600cc parallel twin with direct injection - 120hp straight out of the box, very lightweight, and dead easy to get 200hp from for not massive outlay like these custom race engines mentioned.

Personally I think its a great idea. I raced 2 stroke bikes for years and found them great fun and very reliable.

Yes indeed, well I think we have moved on a bit and in the period beween the Arrow and Leader there have been some advancements in 2 stroke lubrication systems that have already been witnessed on the hills as as well as elsewhere.

IT was to be an exciting project a guy here had a 500 speed way car w this type of engine and two speed box he ended up a multiple Aus champion in speedway,,
RIGHT the engine was a PSI Performance 1500cc Genesis V.E.P
320hp&200ft lbs torque... they use these engines in D sports racers in the USA... there was a story in racecar enginerring 2002 about sports racers in the US... The guy here who won many speed way titles was Ken Willsher He was also lending his assistance as well as John Cooley from cool Chassis again a speedway chassis maker ......

They did indeed it was tested by Coulthard and Alain Menu. Has lived in the DAF museum for the past decade but was in pieces in Williams a few weeks back. I got a good look around it but no one appeared to know that much about it unfortunately :-/

Jack Brabham also built a racing car using the Daf transmission system which was used in the Daffodil. Was it called Variomatic.....

The DAF tranmission was indeed called Variomatic. It was very successful in the wet but the weight handicap was too much in dry conditions especially in the one-litre F3 era.
