Air filter socks - any good?
Does anyone have any experience of individual air filter socks that fit over ram pipes?
I'd always been led to believe they sapped power, but now I find myself with a need for an easy filtration solution and cannot fit a proper filter with baseplate on my new jenveys. Your thoughts appreciated.... Andy |

They sap power. Personally iwould avoid them, but if you have no option atleast they will protect your engine. Saw one sucked into the engine once though.....

I had the same problem with baseplate clearance on Jenveys, it fouled the alternator. bought a pair of double socks lost 1.5% on bhp. But two flat out 7,500 rpm runs and they were torn to bits where they had been sucked into the horns, so not that impressed.

Fit them for day to day use (if its a road legal car) and whip them off for competition.

can you make a bespoke filter using mesh to fit the area available. This will keep most stuff out, but for goodness sake dont use tea strainers clamped, as some do onto the Webers,. Needs to be at least 3" away.....

unless they are supported with an internal cage/frame , They can be sucked in.
Also proximity of the sock to the bellmouth will affect airflow and the standoff. then they stand a chance of becoming saturated [not good].The safest thing would probably be to create a box and have a remote filter elsewhere. |

I had a chat with a bloke called Andy Jackson on the ITG Stand about the pros and conns mentioned above. I have flat slides with bellmouths and worry about eating stones everytime I drive through 3 sisters paddock. He (as you would expect ) said that designed properly the foam one piece filter that pushes on over the bellmouths makes a very very small difference to output. The one he showed me had a metal frame within the sides and top to prevent it being sucked in. He said that if you send measurements to him it would be made to suit for £70ish +vat. I wonder, cheaper than an engine!
