If you want to reduce weight, then reducing waist diameter is quite effective too

I would have thought that extra weight on the wheels would be a Good Thing.

I would have thought that wheel nuts were one of the last things to compromise on. If he reduces the waste diameter he still has to leave sufficient for the spanner to fit and sufficient on the in board end to retain the taper, and how much is he going to save on a 10mm/3/8" wheel nut x 16. Much safer to remove the few grammes elsewhere. Friend of mine lost a wheel nut/stud from a front hub, went into a left hander at 120 +, wheel collapsed and goodnight Vienna, several hundred poundsworth of bits needed.

Extra weight on the wheels = unsprung weight = bad news! For the sake of a few grammes, I'd rather not modify anything to do with the wheel nuts / studs / fastenings.

120+ MPH! Thats a speed I can only dream of at a Sprint in the UK. Point taken though.

It will hurt almost as much at 100mph Graham.

There are a few production cars out there that are fitted with nuts that aren't made of steel.
