Another gloves query

I just started sprinting and I haven't been wearing gloves. However, as they're mandatory next year I thought I might as well get a pair and get used to them. I really want them as thin as possible on the palm side, and no need for knuckle reinforcement as I'm driving a road car with a relatively large cockpit. But the steering wheel is leather, so I want something that's going to grip it well (changing the wheel would be prohibitively expensive).

I was thinking of either the AWS Nomex gloves at http://www.advanced-wear.co.uk/page11.html but they're ISO6940 which I can't find in the blue book. It's also not clear what the palm material is.

The others that looked OK are the OMP Rally gloves at http://www.demon-tweeks.com/products...ode=OMPIB702LB but would these be OK as the palm side appears to be suede and hence not fireproof? Although I suppose the suede could be on top of the Nomex.

ISO 6940 is the correct one, check table 114 on page 171 of the Blue Book. Basically any new gloves you buy from a reputable company, stating they are FIA approved will be to this standard.

Ah, I was looking at C(c) 81 on p168. It says they must 'cover the cuffs' -- is that why some of the gloves are gauntlet style?

I presume so, I find these nice and lightweight, comfortable and with a good sense of "feel" to them reasonable pricewise as well. http://rallynuts.com/motorsport/OMP_...loves_3584.asp

I have some of the Alpinestar ones with silicon pads, really grippy even when wet. Much better then the suede padded ones IMHO

Btcc not quite correct, the iso 6940 standard has been withdrawn for FIA use , whilst it is still currently acceptable for national competition.

The majority of new gloves that have come out in the last year are all to the current fia 8858 standard, which is why in the dt cat it shows some as Fia approved and some as "complies with iso6940"

But back to carls original question, as a new fia standard has come out it's seems reasonable to assume that the original iso standard will be withdrawn at some point in the future, so it would make sense to buy an fia approved glove if having to buy new.

The alpinestars tech 1 gloves are prob the best best as it has a silcone rubber print on the palm which will give the best grip on the leather wheel

Yep, sorry the Blue Book still does quote the old standard tho. But all the gloves I have seen for sale new recently including the ones in the link I quoted are labeled with the newer FIA standard. 8856-2000

Borrowed from another forum.

The following is from Motorsports Now Spring 2009 edition

The reference C(c) - 77-101 includes
para 78. Clean flame-resistant overalls must be worn which can be manufactured from Nomex III, Proban or equivalent materials.
Para 81 as quoted in previous posts permits BSEN533 overalls.
As the date of implementation is 1 Jan 2010 then BSEN533 overalls are OK for 2010

Para 28 of the Rule Changes from Motorsports Now also strongly recommends the wearing of flame resistant gloves but this is a change from the previous announcement that gloves were to become mandatory in 2010

Personaly, I wouldn't dream of not wearing gloves whilst competing.

Thanks for this recommendation. I bought the Tech 1 gloves and used them in anger for the first time today at Debden. My times still suck, but I felt I had a good grip on the wheel and I didn't really notice I was wearing them. Highly recommended.

Dave

Does this mean that 6940 should be ok for sprints and hillclimbs next year?
