Avons do the job properly and safely, and have done, in my personal experience, for at least the past 25 years.
They are not cheap - but decent things never are. Why waste time and money trying the unknown. I was the first person in the UK to use Hoosiers on a single seater, when I bought a set from the then importer (James Slack - remember him - competed in a Westfield ? ) in the early nineties. They were the softest compound available at the time. He and I spent a lot of time, and a lot of calls to America, to get the best compound and try to establish Hoosiers for speed events in the UK. What a waste of time and money - couldn't get heat in them, didn't grip for the first 200 yards, and went flat in the trailer after a couple of days. I also had the ignominy of Paul Smith at BMTR having a chuckle when I had to buy Avons a few months later ! I am happy to let others do these things nowadays and watch the result / resultant carnage. Since my Hoosier experiment in the early nineties - 20 years ago - nobody has so far produced anything better than Avon. I would suppose it is because the marketplace is small and specialised, and it does not warrant the development costs by any other manufacturer to attempt to topple Avon and get a decent share of what is, after all, a very small market. |

The first thing that is evident is that the car in th pictures said to be using HC100's has the totally wrong setup. Look at the tyres in the photos, theres just about half of the tyre patch being used, if that!! Way to much negative for those tyres! I imagine the cars setup was just left the same as it was with whatever tyres were on it before which I am afraid rarely works!! Remember, different constructions of tyres require very different setups i.e pressures, camber setting etc. |

Ok can"t sit back any longer I seem to be one of the few that use HC100 and find them very good but you need to set the car up right to get the best out of them, I run 1100cc single seater and finish 3rd overall in 2011 hills in northern ireland. These tyres are not for every one but they work for me, have a look on youtube Rhin0racing its the s/seater one and see them working, avons also work but cost more, HC100 get better the more you drive them! your thoughts Robert

Alan Curmi who won the 2011 Single seater 1600cc class here in Malta ran the same set all season and seemed to get better results as he went along. He even managed two overall wins up against the big car engined cars towards the end of the championship. In 2010 he ran Avons and had the best result when they were brand new......from then he just went downhill with the results getting worse and worse as time goes by. This is same car, same driver, same hills which we are comparing. I must admit, the setup, pressures etc. needed some radical changes when he switched from the Avons to Dunlops......but with time the end results have proved to be better. The times say it all! |
