Battery Size
I am trying to get some advise on the capacity of battery to use in a hillclimb car. The engine is 2 litre and running a total loss system (no alternator) It is injected (Bosch 044 pump approx 15amp), it will also be running with a Davies Craig electric pump (EWP80 8amp) Any other draw on the battery will be the Stack Rev counter (fused at 1amp) The ECU Webcom Alpha (I have no idea on what his will draw)
The car will always be started with an external battery. Can anybody give me some advise on the size of battery they use with a similar setup. Thank you |

I run the Saxon with tiny Lithium batteries (1/2kg 2700mAh)- but it is marginal - have to change them every run. (Total loss, fuel injection, external starter - so probably similar if not slightly less than your requirements as it's an 1100).
The red top 15 type/size battery should do the job for you, but I would suggest having a second one to swap out at lunch-time. If you're feeling flush, the lithium batteries from Braille, Racing Batteries, Super B etc in the 15 size are damn expensive but less than half the weight of the AGM types.... Steve |

from experience i would not run a total loss system again. The reduction in performance was noticable and I was running a monster battery in the car. I would fit a small alternator and small battery for the running and then slave start battery
If you need a small compact alternator give me a ring and i will explain what I am using on the pilbeam 07766547871 Just my opinion cheers ben |

Depending what venue you are at, dont forget to allow for the fact that you may have to stop the engine to save overheating during some-ones off and may not have an external battery to hand or in fact some-one to drag one to the start line for you..........

Just to add to the debate.
I have a 1.6 16V injected Vauxhall that I use as a hire car on Circuits. I have a NEW 21ah battery from a fire alarm. The car has external starting but no charging system. The fuel system has two fuel pumps and all of the dash is electronic. We normally manage 80 miles of running on one charge and the battery still has enough to start the car at the end of the days running. I would imagine a 12ah battery would be sufficient if it were new, and kept happy with a simple 12v solar charger, or similar, between runs. |

I used a Red Top 40 in a simiilar set-up. It worked perfectly and would complete a double event without charging, including engine starter!

red top 25, would do mine for 4-5 runs on total loss, carbs, rad fan, instruments.
would need charging at an Aintree sprint as we get 7 runs!! |

Why do you guys run a total loss system? Is it just for weight?
