Bio Ethanol

Sue and I are trying to do our bit on bringing peoples attention to the global warming problem by switching to Ethanol fuel on the Gould. The environment in and around the car will be a lot better(ethanol does not give off the obnoxios fumes like methanol and smells quite sweet) for paddock marshalls drivers and mechanics etc. I would be pleased to hear from anybody else who has gone down this route over the winter.

The rules say Pump fuel only, also a lot of venues don't allow Methanol, due to the invisible burning, different fire extinguishers (water) etc. Don't know about Ethanol...

Lots of pumps selling Ethanol?

My interpretation of "pump" fuel is fuel supplied to the engine via a fuel pump rather than a gas (nitrous etc).Additives can give Ethanol and Methanol a blue flame when ignited.

Nice try!

However MSA Blue book Terminology P60, Pump Fuel (d) states:
"Bio Ethanol - Only permitted to be used with the specific approval of the MSA. Specifications available from the MSA Technical Department."

Here is a comment from a pedant: That interpretation could be reached if it, "the Blue Book", said 'pumped' fuel. I would think that 'pump fuel' is that obtained for use from a pump. What exactly does the Blue Book say ??? Remember statements that are defined by 'Should' and 'Would' are advisory whilst 'Shall' and 'Will' are mandatory or, at least, they were when I was debating and defining the content of Directives and Statutory Instruments. Thank god that is all in the past.

I'd like to think that the MSA would change the rules to allow it .The bad publicity of not allowing a greener fuel should concentrate their minds . Isn't there a race series run on Bio fuel ?
I would imagine that if Ethanol gave any significant perfomance gains they might have reservations . but if Willem can run twin turbos then I dont think ethanol can be argued against .

Just make sure you dont drink it

Sample SR for events, as faras I know most events / venues have a similar rule.

13. For reasons of safety, pump fuels only are permitted in all
classes at Kames
