Methanol (Smell)

Hi Delboy. I for one love the smell of your car as it powers up the hills.Hope the Bi Ethanol makes the engine pop and bang the same.

Have to disagree there. Standing beside/behind a methanol burner on the startline is not a pleasant experience. Some are worse than others - the Fidoe sports-libre car used to be particularly nasty.

Even if bio-ethanol smells like sh*t, it's probably better than some of the more exotic mixtures that appear from time.

However, nitrous oxide was always good for a laugh (sorry . . . )

There is no issue whatsoever with E85 pump fuel with regards to safety over normal fuel at events. E85 contains 15% petrol which will burn with a visible flame, unlike methanol which burns invisibly.

The MSA should treat E85 in exactly the same way as normal fuel in my opinion.

At GM the only measures we have in place for fuel dispensing from barrels over other fuels is that we are told to fill in a well ventilated area & not to breathe the vapours in too much - thats all. In fact I would say filling up a car is no different to standing in a pub when pints are being pulled - smells the same to me!

As to opinions on it being green - simplified its a fuel made by photosynthesis in plants which is then extracted by a process. Unlike fossil fuel it hasn't sat underground for millions of years so its production is a whole lot more efficient.
