British hillclimb noise regulations

Our Maltese club has come up with the bright idea of introducing noise regulations to our local hillclimbs.

Can someone please give a brief explanation of what the noise regulation is in the UK for the MSA british hillclimb championship.

At what revs is the noise checked?
What is the max DB figure allowed?

Thanks

Measured at 2/3 of max engine revs.

The interpretation of what constitutes "2/3 max revs" during these tests is interesting to say the least......

110dB is the norm for us, but "drive by" readings are taken at some venues.

With a properly packed silencer and some sort of airbox / filter for your carbs/throttle body this shouldn't be a problem for most.

Will be interesting to see what you guys adopt.

Thanks for your replys guys.

As you said Steve, "2/3 max revs" is interesting to say the least!!!!!

How do you define 2/3 max revs????? How does a scrutineer determine 2/3 max revs of a race tuned engine??

If we were dealing with factory standard engines that you can rely on the manufacturers specs then this would be a different story.

It just makes me love racing in Sicily even more. Their theory is "the more noise the better" and none of this nonsense!!!!

I think that I have been told 107db at some venues so I suspect that it is specific to the venue. Can anyone clarify?

Don't forget that decibels is logarithmic with 3db representing a doubling of noise.

Does the noise scrute have any other instructions to follow when measuring the level ? I have watched them do it at SW and they do not always do it as shown in the diagram. The method I have seen mostly is the probe placed very close to the exhaust pipe.

The Noise Levels vary, some venues run at 110, some at 108 and some at 105. The static noise tests are the ones I always find dubious as there is often obstructions close at hand which rebound the noise to the test unit.

Josh, up here in Scotland, the noise scrutineer has a table of max revs and 2/3'ds revs - you indicate what the engine's max revs are and they tell you to hold the engine at whatever revs the table indicates accordingly.

It's about time the MSA changed this rule to be aligned with the test for a car that has to pass IVA. I built an Ultima a little while ago, and when it went for it's IVA test, the rule was 2/3 of the revs "at which the car makes maximum power".

A subtle difference, but sensible when you think about it.

Kelvin

It isn't the probe as such, it is the 500mm, 45 deg offset gauge, the mic in the noise meter is at the other end of it as per diagram above.
