In Car Filming

Are there any standards for having a camera/camcorder set up in car at sprints/hillclimbs? I competed a couple of days ago and there seemed a whole range of methods - from the obviously expensive and professional set up, to seemingly gaffer taping a camera to the headrests!

Are the kind of suction mounts that can be bought suitable? It would be interesting to see what any scrutineers reading this would say. I suspect a few of the methods I saw were put in the car after srutineering took place!

I think the main concern of scrutineers is that the camera cannot fall off, gaffer tape and velcro seem to work well, and who is going to risk losing a very expensive piece of equipment with a shoddy fastening. If you are a professional, use a professional set up, if an amateur use the best you can afford and see what they say.

I reckon that at the meetings that I attend, at least half the competitors have a camera strapped to the car so it cant be too much of a problem......

I am always surprised that there is no requirement for a secondary means of security as is the norm in the pro market. I have rigged a fair amount of broadcast kit in my time and have always been obliged to attach a secondary means of retention to avoid any hazard or danger caused by the the primary failing.

Groves Velcro / Cable ties

We have run cameras on the big classes in the British Championship for a few years. Most of the bullets have been simply attached to the role hoops with velcro supplied by Martin's company 'Groves Banks'. It will NOT pull off.

The recorders have sat in the side pods or above the engine in a 'semi-encased' position, where the damage would be limited to the equipment alone.
Suitably attached by cables ties, etc. The weight of any 'kit' of parts for filming is less than 1 kilo.

Look at the weight of the kit, inertia, etc. and make shure it cannot move into a control device, ie. the wheel and the pedals.

Even Scottie uses Groves velcro. !!

Rigid camera mounts also available ..........

Speak to Jos Goodyear...

His camera was still firmly attached and running after his "moment" on Sunday between posts 5 and 6

Warning

It should be noted that at some sprint venues there is a charge for in-car filming! So it is vital that competitors fully read the Regulations and Final Instructions.

Mounting the camera on the car after scrutineering is also frowned on for safety reasons - see Red Turner's earlier post.
