Car spec

Reading a report on another site about the weekend Shelsley,it stated a car was running a new aero package over the weekend but team removed the side pods for the final run and made fastest run.
In Australia we have to present the car in its ready to compete spec to scrutineering.
A few years ago at Bathurst Peter Gumley had the engine cover come during a run,the run was disallowed as the car did not finish the run in the spec it started.
I understand the reason for that but wonder if the first one is a grey area?.

It's not a grey area, you really should be re-scrutinised if you change any areo, makes sense as the new bit might fall off!

They don't make F1 teams do that when they replace damaged nose cones etc during a race?.

No but they can scrutinise the car at the end of the race.

Maybe cars taking part in the Top 12 Run-Offs should be checked over by a scrutineer after the runs and anyone changing the spec being excluded?

In that instance the term bolting the stable door after the horse has bolted springs to mind.
I suppose that in the event quoted no one raised a protest?

I would have thought it changed the silhouette of the car and there fore made the run inelligeable. You canot practice a Westfield without the roof and then run with it in place as it changes the aerodynamics... or so I am told

I may be wrong but it was the sidepod covers that were removed . the flat bit at the bottom remained . so the silhouette did not change .

if every change to aerodynamics needed to be checked then the Scrutes would be very busy boys !

Interesting point & there's several ways of approaching it.

Having bits drop off is not part of most people's strategy though it can happen to anyone. I think re-scrutineering should be reserved for cases where the change might be really dangerous, e.g. after a crash could have made the car dangerous. Have to admit I have been tempted (twice in fact) to run with only one side of the front aero intact, but luckily came to my senses & retired instead.

Changing aero should not, in itself, be a problem. Anyone who can, will tweak front or rear wing angles.

Bearing in mind that F1 do that on the rear whilst on the move now

I think you will find that having the roof up or down isn't a problem. Maybe you have to have the folded down rag-top in the car at all times?
