Carb air scoops?
My porsche 911 engined Lola is back from the rollers in rude health.
The people who tuned it are porsche specialists and very respected, so thier thought are to be considered seriously. The poor running i've suffered for 3 years should now be done with, but they have suggeted i fit 'tall' air scoops to each car instead of the squat filters to get clean air into the cars (they are tripple choke carbs, one each side of the flat 6 engine. The reason they say this is the one carb is right behind my helmet air-stream wise while the other is in clean air. Before I embark on a custom set of fibre glass scoops (home made) do you experts think this is a waste of time? It will be hard to get the driver's side carb fed with clean air even with an F5000 scoop! Graham. ![]() ![]()

I have looked into this as an option to fit onto my FF2000.
It is interesting to note that the winning cars do not have them fitted. ( and circuit cars are going faster than hill climb cars.) |

Correct Greg and Graham should think about how all the air got into the carbs when the engine was fitted in the Porsche in a lot more restricted place. Some 'experts' spout some real cr*p....Remove the filters at your test day and see what happens

I did at Loton last year, first run it went 1 sec faster, second run with the open carbs and the open exhaust 2nd gear blew off the line....
I don't want to have to make any tbh so I think the air gets there. I have a road going 911 with this same engine in it but stock air filter etc and that does fine. |

Hi Graham, take a look at the Ferrari P4 replica's that Neil Foreman does.
-On their "Spyder" version of the P4, they do some air scoops with intakes that exit sideways from the air boxes, then turn 90 deg, to face forward. Maybe just what you are looking for?! Good luck! Gra. |

Graham:
That was I was thinking as a shape and to make them from fibreglass would take an age and look strange too. Thanks, but I'm leaving them open on a run. Car is nearly ready for the off. |

I do know a little about air flow and it may well be that the air flow being drawn in by the engine will not be sufficiently improved but fitting a snorkel. I have read about snorkels actually providing a restriction over an "Open inlet"
There are a few ways you could test the efficiency of this type of thing, either by checking the air flow around the car in a wind tunnel, (expensive) The second way could be to fit a vacuum/manifold pressure gauge tube in the snorkel and see if you have either vacuum or positive pressure inside the snorkel. My personal feeling is that it might be an interesting technical exercise but you probably will be disappointed with the results at slower speeds. I don't think your head would cause enough disturbance to upset the running of the engine to a degree where you would notice it from the point of view as a driver. I would be interested to see how you get on. |
