Cheap onboard video cameras

Hi all,

Just thought some may be interested with some recent experiences of using cheap onboard video recorders on vehicles.

Recently I was introduced to some very cheap (£6) spy key fob cameras which are very light and amazing quality for the price. Easy to install - We just mounted them using industrial velcro or tape!

You can see a sample video at for quality at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OlUucyP-ys

I was so amazed with the quality I bought 2 for myself from the well known auction site with SD memory cards for £12 each!!

The sample footage below shows the quality when used during our staedy state testing. All of the onboard shots were taken with the key fob cameras.

Obviously the cameras are not fully waterproofed, and another downside is that they don't compress the video files, but this can be done once downloaded.

Yes I have seen one, my mates kid has one on his remote controlled tank.
Its OK for 14 quid but thats about it.
Whoever wrote the spec that goes with it makes Enid Blyton look like a technical writer.
I wouldn't waste a valuable battery on it.

There are plenty of sellers on fleabay... Just search for key fob camera. More info at http://www.chucklohr.com/808/. I got my two from UK sellers. I have 2 and the students have them as well so we stuck them all over the car.

Obviously the GoPros are designed for use on cars etc and are more robust and waterproof.... Obviously the key fob ones may not be very resilient but mine seem to be standing up ok at the moment and for £6 plus the SD memory card can't complain....

I tried one for the first time at the weekend.
The results are pretty good given the cost although I'd like to try to isolate it from the vibration of the car (carbon tub with motorcycle engine).

Cheap muvi low def camera thing, got it for 15 quid off ebay IIRC from China. Seems they are either more expensive or all HD ones now . . .

Just zip tied onto the wing endplate with a wee strip of aluminium as a bracket . . . and I'll probably zip tie it onto other things this season if I can remember to charge it and bring it along.

Quality is terrible but fine for a laugh, I think all of these slow scanning sensor devices just don't cut it on high vibration cars . . . but given it's basically disposable . . . you can't really argue.
