class regulations, for a newcomer
hi, sorry if this has been covered elsewhere but I am new to hillclimbing.
last year I built a proton satria Gti road rally car, full cage, proper seats and belts, Gaz Gold suspension, hydraulic handbrake etc and fitted a 1600 mivec engine instead of the standard 1800. After 10 years of stage events I found I did not like road rallies, they would be mint if the roads were closed. Anyway I took the sump guard and tank guard off, got rid of the rear seats, changed the springs, bought some old rally slicks and had a go at a trackday or two. fantastic fun but I am missing the timed element, so sprints and hillclimbs it is in 2012. Question is Which class does my car fit into. It is currently MOT'd and sorn, don't really want to have to tax and insure it, I have a van and trailer to get it to events. |

Hello
Your car sounds pretty cool. Welcome to Uphill Racers :-)
With your original engine and the car as described you would be in mod prod. The mivec engine is my only confusion, is it the same block as the original engine? If it isn't you could be in libre, anyway there are plenty of mod prod/libre bods on here and I'm sure they will be along shortly to elucidate. Alternatively with a full compliment of interior trim, tax, ticket, list 1a (or 1b tyres (depending on local regs), you could be in road mod (if the block/head are legit) although I'm not 100% sure about fly off handbrakes either. ![]() Cheers J |

Hi jamie
to be honest, i'm not bothered about which class I would be in, just want to be out there. obviously don't want an illegal car in class but the only person i will be racing is me. I just need to have a look at several venues whilst in the satria with a view to having a more competitive car for the following year. I really don't want to tax or insure the car and i would prefer to use slicks. re the engine it is a 1600 instead of the original 1800 but i think the block is used on other models in the range. I see that you are based in Leeds, so am I |

Welcome to the hills, best thing you could do is join a local club, (Harewood being your nearest I think) they will lead you down the correct path as to what class your car will fit into.

Have a look for Geoff Harrison in the Technical Officiails (otherwise known as scrutiineers....) listing in the (old) Blue Book. He is the man to speak to and will give you the information relevant to competing at Harewood.
Very approachable! |
