Closed Road Hillclimbs

Anyone know about the proposed RACMSA attempt to close public roads for hillclimbs as done in EU..I think RAC motorclubs have to locate a venue and submit it to the RACMSA to pass onto the goverment..Anyone have any ideas for venues...

I have my own local route planned, yes

Surely everyone else has done this on Google Maps?

Its only there, as the full title of the 'club' is 'The Royal Automobile Association Motor Sports Association'. Always has been. The breakdown business has no real association with the MSA and hasn't for quite a few years.

Apologies Milner.

Teaboy knows my favourite road to have as a hill climb.

Start at the Talbot at Knightwick and go up Ankerdine hill (B4197) towards Martley.
Superb road.

Original thread on this subject

Here.

I don't feel the need to comment too often but while I'm about it, the forum owners (that's me and admin) are not averse to what you choose to call nit-picking. It's what sets this forum apart from a few others and is one of the reasons why we are busier than the others. You can generally say pretty much what you like. Those that were here at the very beginning and with the forum that preceded it know exactly what I mean.

It would be great to see this sort of thing happen but I don't see it being very successful for club level sprints and hillclimbs. To overcome the protesters there has to be an incentive for the community, usually in the form of money and trade. This needs spectators and plenty of them.

An event would need some prestige machinery, e.g. historical and/or exotic cars, to pull in the necessary numbers. Or perhaps it could be a support to another successful event, e.g. a motorsport festival. Yes, I know...its has already been done!

We had a local sprint at New Brighton (on the Wirral) but closing the roads required policing, barriers, hay bales etc. All of this costs money. New Brighton no longer happens because it isn't financially viable.

The other alternative is for a sprint or hillclimb to use roads that have already been closed for another event such as a tarmac stage rally. That would allow the costs to be shared. New Brighton did this too, as far as I can recall, but it still ended up withering on the vine.

If anyone can come up with a road layout that is sufficiently remote from house owners but close enough for spectators and competitors, or can find a group of houseowners (and farmers) who are petrol heads then it may be viable. However I regard this as a dream rather than reality.

There is probably more scope in trying to run an event at a stately home, probably out of the main tourism season (early Spring, late Autumn), to give the owners a new or diverse income. The September Thorseby Park sprint (Notts SCC) is a good example.

Best of luck to those who try to find such venues.

In the meantime we also need to concentrate on not losing the venues that we already have. There are currently too many events (*) for the number of active competitors and their available racing budgets. If events are not financially viable then we may see them cancelled. It is hard to get events and venues back once they are lost.

I feel that I am being realistic rather than being defeatist.

Craig Powers

(*) The historic and prestige hillclimbs will not have seen the dwindling entries that many other venues have witnessed.
