JM has taken it all quite well and I have a sneaking suspicion that he is playing along just a bit

We were somewhere on the Isle of Man and dad and I were watching various Grand Prix Bugattis in action, sitting amongst some local motorsport enthusiasts, who didn't quite understand the older motorscars. One piped up,

" .....that last chap was pumping something on his dashboard as he went past! What was all that about?"
There was silence from his mates, so dad chimed up as follows,
"he's got a pressurised fuel tank to push the fuel through to the carb, instead of a fuel pump. They did it like that in those days. His tank probably has a small air leak so he's topping it up, to keep the pressure up. Yes its a bit like a bike pump I suppose."

Local bloke replies (more to his mates),
" Imagine going on your holidays in one of those Bugattis hey? You'd come back like ruddy Popeye!"
