Data Logging

We're thinking of doing some simple data logging. I was wondering what data loggers people are using most and what experiences they have?

We want to do simple gps position, speed, g-forces for comparison between different runs.

Nice to have capabilities would be to overlay video (either at the time or afterwards) and overlaying of different runs in the software.

Thanks in advance.

Simon

Race Technology DL1 would do the job for you. You can add capability as you go. Many will do a passable job with just GPS and internal accelerometers but I would strongly suggest using a wheel sensor as well - the systems just aren't accurate enough for hill climbing without this in my view (and believe me, I have experiemented!). You can also link to a dash system and control external outputs (e.g. shift lights, relays etc). Their system can either use third party video or you can buy an all in one box which I think they call the video 4. I went the separate route since I wanted to use higher quality video. It is a bit more of a faff but works for me. If all you want is a video of your run though then the video 4 is probably easier.

For hill climbing I'd suggest:

Must have:

Accel position
Break pressure
Front wheel sensor

Nice to have:

Steering angle
Ride hieght
Multiple wheel sensors

Happy to chat if you decide to go the RT route. I have been doing a lot of testing work with them on their software to make it more useful for open circuit events like ours.

Video VBox is an alternative system which is relatively cheap and cheerful. Not used it myself though. Beyond that I think you start looking at PI etc and this get pricey.

I agree with Clive - a wheel speed sensor is important, although you can derive wheel speed from RPM and gear. Lat/long G, RPM and GPS help too. I'd probably go with steering angle over brake pedal pressure and throttle position over both.

I've got a RacePak G2X with dash, mainly because I found one poorly advertised on Ebay and picked it up for just over £200! I combine with my video from a GoPro HD with RaceRender. If you're at club night, we can talk about it then - can bring the laptop to show workflow if you like.
