Editing .mp4 files from GoPro HD camera

As per the title - I am considering the purchase of a GoPro HD and I believe that it produces the video in .mp4 format (?)

Does anyone have experience of loading this format successfully into Windows Live Movie Maker for subsequent editing and then DVD burn ?

Is there any other alternative software that can be recommended ?
Thanks very much.

Regards
Kelvin

Hi, don't know the answer to your question, but having briefly tried the Hero HD on my Morgan, I was a bit disappointed with the sound recording (possibly being open topped). You might want to have a look at the HDMax Extreme camera (see Dogcam) which has a built in screen and option for an external mic. If you do want a Hero HD, you could have mine off me for a bit of a discounted price.

I would have thought the best person to ask would be that very nice Robcapper.

I run my GoPro in an open topped car. Which back did you have on yours? I used the waterproof (sealed) back for this video.

You can edit video for the GoPro in Windows Live Movie Maker, allegedly, although I've never bothered, as you can tell from my video uploads!

Hopefully he will be along soon, with a definitive answer.

Andy, your video sounds great. I wonder if the difference is your engine is in the back, close to where the camera is mounted, while mine in at the front some distance away? I had the waterproof casing on as per instructions.

When you consider what it does for the price as an all rounder its pretty good. I have paid a lot more than the camera price for a decent microphone.

A remote mounted mic with a decent wind shield would make all the difference in the Morgans case.

Problem with the GoPro Hero is that you can't plug in an external mic. The new / other model (HDMax), you can. It also has a built in screen.

Sorry, I read it that you could use an external mic, my apologies.

Mike,

You raise a very good point. My camera is mounted about 8 inches ahead of the air intake, hence why the sound is predominantly intake noise, not exhaust note. The sound is very loud there - I have to wear ear plugs to avoid a strong pain in my ear at >10000rpm and full throttle.

I think there might be a microphone input on the expansion port, but that's undocumented and GoPro have not been particularly forthcoming with new products. Remote shutter release mods have been done, but only with a soldering iron. There's a whole forum community for the cameras.

Cheers,
Andy
