Extinguisher - in date?

Does an extinguisher, if fitted, need to be in date to pass scrutineering?

This has been asked a few times and I think the conclusion was that the FIA need it to be in date but not the MSA.

It does have to be armed and ready for use though.

How out of date is it?

It is you sat in it remember.

Pressure gauge shows 'full' and the battery in the box gives a bright warning light. Wont know until I try it of course. Its about 2 yrs past its best before date.

Graham, if you have a word with your local car club if they have their own fire extinguishers they might be able to get yours tested at a reduced price along with theirs.

I compete in France on the odd occasion and compete under FIA rules, who insist that extinguishers are fitted and working on ALL cars. When mine expires I simply take it to the 'certified' installers who do the ones in our workshop and let them do it. I dont have the hassle of having to send it away. It's not so much the pressures being right, it's more to check that the powder hasn't settled and compacted....

Hi Graham
I have a wooper! of an extinguisher in the Fiat 500 purely to protect the investment! I had mine serviced at DT last year just for piece of mind. If your in any doubt get it serviced, Ive seen more burnt out cars than you can shake a stick at in my line of work and belive me once they get going they take a lot of stopping!
Ian

One extinguisher serviced and re-filled. £49 while you wait. Great service from lifeline in Coventry as usual.
