Fairley Climax

I collected the Reg Phillips' Fairley Climax from its former home in the Midlands today. It has been out of action for some while, having blown a large hole in the side of its Coventry Climax engine when being run by former owner Paul Bason at Shelsley Walsh a few years ago. Using an engine that had seen extensive historic rally use in my Lotus Elite over many years, Tony Mantle of Climax Engine Services has now pieced together what I hope will be a worthy replacement for the original.

Here's a couple of photos of the frame before re-assembly:

At the moment I have only a very sketchy knowledge of the car's history, other than what I have gleaned from Paul, and I am hoping that the experts on this forum will be able to fill in some of the gaps for me and/or point me in the right direction.

Having run the engine earlier today I suspect that the most immediate problem is going to be finding some way of attaching an exhaust silencer. Four open pipes are currently a bit LOUD...

I will post a couple of more up to date photos later.

Peter

Quoting from Simon Taylor's excellent Shelsley book, I can as a start tell you that the Fairley-Climax captured a BTD of 37.33 at the 28 August 1960 meeting. I understand the car was Cooper 500-based and your photos seem to back that up.

Wow, looks fantastic! -I cannot wait to see it finished!

Meantime, grab yourself a copy of the JMW "1959 British Hillclimb Championship" DVD.
-There is some footage of the car running.

Best wishes, Gra.
