Power is still going up at 7000, are the internals unsafe after that or have you just use a safe limit?

Damn good question.

We’d all like to run more revs, both to run lower gearing avoiding bogging down whilst avoiding the rev limiter for as long as poss. on the straights.

Sadly, knowing what safe is, is either a black art or expensive.

A very crude measure is stroke. Here is my “chart” for iron Ford stuff:

1300 Xflow 63mm I’d guarantee for 9, but some go to 10.
1500 Xflow/Twin-Cam 73mm Didn’t blow up at 8.
Recent Ford 2-litres ~85mm Worried at 7.

A well known breeder of Beagles suggested the real correlation was with the solid core of metal that existed if you looked along the crank, i.e. overlap between: stroke, main dia. & big end dia.

But ultimately, it’s the man who pays the bills who sets the rev limit.

Something like 287bhp/tonne.

Hi Graham,

Very nice figures, now comes the interesting bit diff/gear ratios as to not loose any more than 600rpm on change up at 6,100, thus staying within peak torx, wish I had this problem, that would mean my engine woes would be behind me, LOL.

Regards,

John

I'm on the fast ford stand at Trax. Come say hello.

Red line was set in the ecu to 7000 purely as a cautious guess, but with the last power run taking place at 6.30pm we'd run out of time to do anymore.

The curve shows it was still increasing, and the stock rod bolts are only good for 7250-7400, so raising the limit to 7400 should give another few bhp.
I'm going to fit the cams which will see +20bhp with the same safe 7400 rpm limit.

Duratec cranks are good for 9000revs, but the rods and bolts aren't.

The package has many options to explore now, limited by my funds of course.
There's a 2.5 litre kit available to stretch a 2.3 block, with 350bhp reported, but the fwd box is the limiter. I'd need a £10k Sadev box to take those levels of bhp.

Trax was superb yesterday. Thousands of people drifted past the Fast Ford stand in the main paddock area (opposite Fast Car magazine), and mine, and Jamie Going's Space Shuttle specificaiton Escort Mk3 were on the stand, with a few other familiar cars.

Jamie spent £18.5K on the Hewland 6speed Touring Car spec gearbox, which is more than my car is worth, so I hope he gets it finished off and running before it all just erodes away. I personally think the install needs a lot of work to bring it up to scratch, but thats the perfectionist in me.

I drove mine for the first time since it was mapped, from the paddock to the trailer park, and I gave it some beans on the bridge over the track, and it broke traction so easily that I'll have to get the slipper installed and the box rebuilt or I'll never get the power down.

I've ordered new hoses this morning from SFS, and I'm now on the lookout for a small alloy header tank to fit on the drivers side, and the VW header tank will be replaced by the Mocal oil breather bottle on the passenger side.

Engine bay is looking far neater now I've trimmed and painted the gearbox cradle (as per KP's suggestion). With the header tank removed, it'll look even better, and I'm just left with ordering a new 30mm shorter driveshaft and air filter element, and she's good to go for some more mapping, suspension setup, and then track time. Cant wait!

Ordered a 3rd and final drive shaft for the car this morning, 30mm shorter than the other two 275mm shafts, and this will allow the suspension to be setup correctly as the present near side driveshaft is too long and binds under compression. Still, at least I have one spare now. x-) Shame they cost a pound a millimetre...

Ordered one of these

from www.evaluation-designs.co.uk

The tank will sit on the drivers side of the engine, and the oil catch tank will sit on the passenger side, where the old VW header tank used to sit.

Ordered a pair of new Tri-lobe joints from M-Sport, so I can send one off to Commercial Propshafts so they can finish off the shorter axle bar.

The snapper from Fast Ford has been in touch and we're planning on using Shelsley Walsh for the photo shoot at the end of September. Just need to clear it with MAC on Monday.
