hillclimbing might have saved my life!
Hi guys just thought i would tell you whats been happening lately .
i think it was at the wiscombe national meeting that i first noticed i was feeling uncomfortable when doing up the harness in the oms ,not so much on the saturday but by sunday afternoon i was certainly in a bit of pain. just forgot about it until i was next out competing at wiscombe again and once again was very uncomfortable even in practice ! my partner nicola pushed me into going to see the doctors {as us blokes dont like going to see them do we!}. He told me i probably had a bladder infection and gave me some tablets to take . Anyway at the last meeting i did which was charmouth in dorset ,every time i strapped myself in i cant tell you how much it was hurting i was in so much pain i just wanted to get out of the car . i then went back to the doctors who suggested a i go and have small operation just to check everything was ok . After waking up in recovery and looking at the clock i thought bloody hell that was no quick op ! it was then that the surgeon came to speak to me and nicola and told us they had found some unusual growths and he was certain they were cancer , i then had to wait two weeks for this to be confirmed {which it was !}. Then back to the hospital for my ct scan to see if it had spread and by how much ,that in itself was not nice being pumped full of iodine so they can see better in the scan !. Then had to wait ten days to find out the results but thank god i was all clear !!!! Still may have to go back in for another op and still in a bit of pain from the first one but getting there . PLEASE GUYS IF YOU THINK SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT GO AND SEE YOUR DOCTOR ! cheers andy |

Glad to hear that it was found quickly and i hope you make a full and quick recovery!
You're right about getting things checked out, a lot of us like to be men and deal with pain, but pain is there to tell us something is wrong! 15 months ago I put off going to the doctors with stomach pains because i was sure it was food poisoning, it was only when i couldnt move with crippling pain that the doctor was called and we found out that my appendix had ruptured. Cue a rather nasty operation to remove it and clear up the debris followed by 9 days in a horrible hospital bed. |

re
and as a further warning, though I was a bit luckier. Got out of bed, went to the toilet as we do and noticed I was passing what looked like blood. In shower and straight to the Doctors. After a quick examination and a phone call I was sent to the hospital and had a camera pushed up and was told that I had a growth. I asked the Doc if it was cancer as you do and he said not yet, but if you had waited it would have been. Two days later I was in hospital having the tumour removed from my bladder. That was 5 years ago and it has'nt been any trouble since. I shudder to think what else they would have been removing if I had passed it off as some urinary tract infection. Be warned all you guys out there, we are not as invincible as we think. Make a speedy recovery Andy.....

Welcome to the "that was a near thing" club, Andy!
Every night that I drove home from work past the doctor's surgery I thought "must go back for the blood pressure check" for more than 6 months................................... ![]() The hillclimber's brain is still only about 18, but all the other bits are getting older! Take care, and hope to see you out next year, with the straps done up tightly! ![]() Cheers! Jonathan |

another thing to do, and you could save someone eles life is to give blood.
I was a regular blood donor until 5 years ago when a routine blood donation attempt failed (at the pin prick test). 5 days later I was at my GPs with him telling me I had Leukaemia (CML for those interested)It was caught in a relativley early stage so treatment was not too bad, and I am still living with it on a daily basis but it is well under control. With hindsight I had all the symptoms and hadn't been on top form for 6 months but I had put that down to having a new family, pressure of work etc. I was the typical bloke that would only see the doctor if my leg had fallen off and then only under duress from the missus so I can only echo andys words about going to see the Doctor. I suspect It would of in my case had to have gotten a whole lot worse before i visited the Dr and by then the cancer would have been in a more aggresive state and treatment and prognosis would have been far worse. update
h
Hi guys just thought i would update as to what has been happening , after being told i was all clear we thought the worst was over ,how wrong we were. Had to go back for an mri scan to check my lymph glands and then straight into a meeting with an oncologist . We had the bad news that it had probably spread to the glands, im now facing three month of intensive chemo ,having a line put in on monday 12th dec, up my arm and into my heart so that it can be delivered that way. I only have to stay in hospital the first day and night then i can come home with a self medicating pump, then return to the hospital at the end of the week to have it disconnected then two weeks for my body to recover and then start again . nicola and i are feeling pretty low at the moment ,there's alot of things to worry about and we only have the next week to sort alot of stuff out ,seeing as i will not be able to work for the foreseeable future ,looks like all the updates and modifications i had planned for the oms have been put on hold !! will keep you posted how things are progressing . cheers andy |

Not sure what to say other than good luck Andy. A good mate of mine has been on it for a while - still has all his hair which is more than I have!
All the best. C
