Lest we forget
Tony Marsh wasn't just a splendid hillclimb and sprint driver/engineer he was also an accomplished Winter sportsman, aviator, yatchsman, autotester, trialist and circuit racer. Tony lived life to the full and although we are all saddened by his passing we should be celebrating a life well lived.

Good call Steve and that is why this has been given a thread of its own.
For people to discuss his achievements and celebrate his life. No other driver in our sport has won the BHC 6 times and as you say he did so much more. |

Defeated the French
He raced an F2 Cooper in 1957 and won the Autocar F2 championship.
His first GP was the combined F1/F2 1957 German GP at the Nurburgring which was the 'greatest victory of all' for Fangio v Hawthorn & Collins and was was also in the 1958 German GP in which Collins died. He led the non-championship Grand Prix de Bruxelles in 1962 driving his privateer BRM but was passed and finished fourth in heat one but was black flagged in heat two for a push start along with Graham Hill. Famously won index of energy class at Le Mans with John Wagstaff driving a Lotus Elite in the 1959 race. This was a formula designed for a French car to win and the frogs were all mightily pee'd off. The formula was introduced after Colin Chamopan had won the earlier index of performance class in 1956 driving a 750cc Lotus climax beating the specially built French DB Panhards. So they created a formula that only they could win but the Team Elite with Tony at the wheel did it again. What a hero. Iranoff

I enjoyed seeing Tony drive at the Goodwood Festival of Speed the year the hillclimb boys were invited....
Gave a good show in the Marsh Special and he was enjoying it judging by the smile on his face....

Tony was always happy to chat and I have to admit to being rather overawed by the man. His diverse exploits seemed beyond those of one person.
I was lucky to have talked to him a number of times over the years and he was kind enough to sign my copy of his book at Gurston last year. And despite being busy with his car he still took the time to tell me how he'd thumped the bank on the outside of Orchard at Prescott in the Marsh Special a number of years ago (an incident which I had witnessed), and then recounted that memorable GP at the Nurburgring. As ever he was modest about his considerable achievements. He will be greatly missed. |

Peter Smith and I shared the GR37 that was originally built for Tony by the Goulds (we bought it from Martin Groves) - Tony had moved up to a newer Gould - on many occasions we were next to him in the paddock at Gurston and he would always have a chat with us about how the car was running etc.
A lovely, lovely man, and he will be missed by all who knew him. Regards Kelvin |
