List 1 b Tyres Help please

Hi,

I am new to hillclimbing and sprints. We (Wife & me) bought a Westfield with a Ford 1700cc engine last year and have done a couple of Scammondens and a Harewood. The plan is to do another 2 scammondens and another Harewood plus Olivers and a do at Aintree at the end of this month.

So....curently the car has Yokohama A539 (180/60/13) fitted and they seem ok. But I expect that before long they will need to be replaced and I was wondering if a move to list b (I am told they are stickier) would be ok and if so which ones. If Scammonden carries on having hail etc probably forest tyres would be an option!!

All advice gladly accepted

Cheers

Bill

1 B's

Yes Bill I would say that you will be out run if you don't move to 1 B tyres. As far as I know pretty much everyone has moved on to these in your class - at least at Harewood if not everywhere.
It just happens that I have a pair of used Toyo R888 185/60/13 tyres up for grabs. These are competitive 1B tyres. They're about half worn but have some useful life in them. I live near Bradford if that's anywhere near for you.
PM me if you're interested, they're very cheap!!

Richard

if you are wanting the stickiest list 1b tyres then IMO you should go for 1 of 2 options, which would suit your westie no problem

1. Kumho V70's in supersoft (or soft) compound, readily available i believe

2. Avon ZZR- in the soft A24 compound - although in this compound you may struggle to get hold of them unless they have made some more recently

The grippiest list 1b tyre to use would be Avon ACB10 sport in A24 compound, not cheap though...

Hi Bill

The Toyo R888 isn't asterixed in the 2011 blue book, so therefore should be on the list next season.

As Crossflow mentions the ACB10 could be the weapon of choice - BUT it's a crossply, and they're not allowed in the various North West series..

The Avon ZZR, in A24 is the current choice, bit smaller diameter at 185/55/13 than the Toyo but they are a bit better.

Unless you use the car on the road in all weathers that is..

I've run the Toyo's (SG compound is the one you want), Yoko's A048's, and the Avon's and purely for competition I would have Avon's every time.
But for a mixture of nearly there in the dry, ok on the road and not 'trickier than a tricky thing' in the wet the Toyo's would be my choice.

Oh and whatever you fit, take it steady on the road on them as they'll wear a bit quick!

HTH.

I've been very pleasantly suprised how good my supersoft Kumho V70's have been in damp conditions

For sprinting and hillclimbing you really need soft or supersoft, or you won't get enough heat in the tyres untill after the last corner......

I've found the SS Kumho's work reasonably well cold (better than the list 1a's that I used to run), and get better as they get warmer.
