Lower Wishbone Intrusion Protection on OMS

I was speaking to SO today and asked him about making something to satisfy the latest MSA regs regarding a cover for the lower wishbone location points inside the tub on things like the 2000M. He said he'd look at designing something if enough people wanted it so I volunteered to ask!

So, would people be interested at c£50-£100 for a kit that could be fitted at home with no welding? Apparently the regs are live now - albeit as yet not known how literally they will be enforced.

Answers on a post card please...

Clive, any idea where in the Blue book the new regs are?

(J) 5.2.1 Be fitted with bodywork including a driver (and passenger) compartment isolated from the engine, fluid filled batteries, gearbox, hydraulic reservoirs, transmission shafts, chains, belts and gears, brakes, road wheels, suspension components including their operating linkages and attachments, petrol/fuel tanks, oil tanks, water header tanks, catch tanks and fuel system components (other than where such components comply with J5.13.1 and J5.13.2) such as to prevent there being a hazard.

I think I've found it :

All vehicles must:
Chassis/Body (including aerodynamics)
5.2.1. Be fitted with bodywork including a driver (and
passenger) compartment isolated from the engine, fluid
filled batteries, gearbox, hydraulic reservoirs,
transmission shafts, chains, belts and gears, brakes,
road wheels, suspension components including their
operating linkages and attachments
, petrol/fuel tanks,
oil tanks, water header tanks, catch tanks and fuel
system components (other than where such
components comply with J5.13.1 and J5.13.2) such as
to prevent there being a hazard.
With the exception of cars of Periods A-E, front engine
vehicles to be fitted with a bonnet covering the engine
and all its’ major components.
Excepting for cars of Periods A-E exposed transmission
shafts, gears and chains to be guarded such as to
prevent their being a hazard.
Where a radiator is not isolated from the driver/
passenger compartment a suitable deflector to be fitted
to prevent fluid directly coming into contact with the
vehicle’s occupants.

I am totally surprised that you guys, who are more than capable of designing and manufacturing new high noses for your cars with all the extra support that they need, cant come up with something simple like I did and as for c£50-£100, the mind boggles. Mine took 15 minutes to design and half an hour to make and cost about £3 for the pair. A simple template out of thin card and away you go.....

But your car is significantly simpler to implement the fix on . . . ;-) . . . piece of flat sheet with a simple bend on, job done, Im not convinced that the 2000m chassis is as simple . . . but . . . in principle I agree ;-)

I have a card prototype for the lower wishbone rear ends which at some point I will convert into steel or ally - it will require welding to fabricate but will probably bolt through the chassis rails to fit (I'll probably use steel as I'm going to go to the bother of doing it then it should work).

Haven't thought too much about the dampers . . . which by my interpretation also need isolation but again I would be thinking a bolt in ally tray or similar (the shape ios also not completely obvious), perhaps secured by rivnuts, A card prototype is something I will be doing in the new year. I don't percieve the dampers being very dangerous so would fabricate this from something lightweight and easy to remove.

some ally tank tape over the holes to the master cylinder compartment and job done ;-)

Considering the number of 200M's that Steve has built, I'm surprised he hasn't already come up with a kit and actively marketing them!
As it's a clear rule, it's a guaranteed market and I would imagine at least 30 kits would be bought as soon as available?
Ok, I'm sure a lot of UHR's are capable of making their own, but plenty aren't!

My SF2 would have also needed mods to be legal, but luckily the Saxon doesn't have the issue.

Quite so Steve. That's the point of asking the question. I could make one myself as I am sure others could (and might) BUT for all the 2000M / SF cars out there, who would rather buy one if SO made one available.

As for ally sheet under the dampers, I think I'd be more worried about the sheet tearing and slicing in to me than a damper shearing off and doing any damage.

I got pulled at Croft Easter Sprint 2 years ago for no front bulkhead panel re Master Cylinders separated from cockpit and penske remotes also in cockpit. Had to plead with scrutineer to be able to run. I've looked round the paddock since then and not many single seaters comply.
