Malcolm Eaves 1932-2008
Veteran Hill Climber Malcolm Eaves was tragically killed in a road accident on Saturday 28th June whilst driving back to his Earlswood, Solihull home after spectating at Prescott hill climb following the Saturday practice for the Midland Hillclimb Championship meeting.
Malcolm, aged 76 was a competitive hillclimb and sprint regular from the late 1950's and was still occasionally competing in the historic single-seater classes until recently. He campaigned many different cars from single seaters including a Lotus 22 twin cam and had run an EVO-Millington sports racer until around five years ago. His most successful season was 1971 when he finished tenth in the British Hillclimb Championship driving a Brabham BT21C powered by a 3.5 litre Buick V8. He was a committee member of the Hillclimb and Sprint Association (HSA) for eight years and also served as HSA Competition Secretary for some time. He is survived by his wife Pam. The Sunday event at Prescott was won by Trevor Willis who said “When I first started out some ten years ago, Malcolm was friendly and helpful towards me at every event where I met him and was generous with his time and knowledge. I dedicate today's run-off victories to him”. (No details of the accident are available at the time of writing and it is subject to police investigation) |

Malcolm was one of the good guys that it was always a pleasure to meet be it at a hillclimb, sprint or the HSA bash. He will be sadly missed by all of us who knew and respected him.

I admired his F5000 Lola at Prescott on Saturday although I didn't get to speak to him. Live today, for no one knows what tomorrow may bring W |

During one of my early attempts to drive a Pilbeam, Malcolm came and told me how well he thought I was doing. I've never forgotten that, as he was one of the drivers I had watched from a distance and had a lot of respect for.
It was always a pleasure to compete along side him in the classic class and I will miss his easy going attitude and gentle manners. Malcolm, you will be missed by many. Oliver |
