Are you sure its the gearbox? I have had problems in the past with the nut holding the diff drive flange coming loose, the noise transmits through the prop making it sound like the 'box - you can easily tell as you will have play in the diff input shaft. If it is this you will have to replace the single use collapsible spacer behind the drive flange. Good luck!

Sounds like a good diagnosis. The prop will have a lot of lift at the diff and you may be able to feel the loose nut.....

I'm trailing the old girl over to Loughborough this morning to have someone look at the problem. We'll soon know what's wrong.

£800 later, the Escort is back.

Needed new layshaft, plus loads of other work to prevent the failure from recurring. Was badly assembled by the clowns who sold the car, missing parts, sheared clutch diaphragm bolts, complete timewasters.

The leccy power steering is now working too, I found a wire that hadn't been pushed on properly, you can now steer with one finger. Next event is a PCT in a weeks time.
