Newbie with many questions (sorry)

Good evening, my name is David Im from Bournemouth and Im seriously looking into entering hillclimbs & sprints. I attended the Gurston Down hillclimb school in July 2009 and loved every minute, also used the car at castlecombe Miniworld action day in Sep 2008.
I have a 1989 Mini
basic spec as follows...................................
1310cc Longman built engine
1"3/4 Single SU
Under 100Db (tested at castle combe)
GRP 2 piece front end and bootlid
Inner wings cut back replaced with brace bars
Stripped interior
2 Corbeau buckets and securon 3pt harness
6 point + door bars 38mm CDS bolt in cage (fitting at present)
Fully adjustable susp
Car is MOT'd, taxed and insured on the road (as of 1st April)

I have made contact with an MSA scrutineer and Im meeting him after easter to see where the car will be classed.
I will be applying for my Nat B non race license in April.

I have a few questions for anyone willing to help.
Firstly unsure about Overalls?? Does a single layer proban EN355 suit cover me for hillclimb/sprints or will it have to be FIA spec?
I believe the helmet has to be SNELL 2005?
Gloves, not sure on spec?
Boots, not sure on spec?
Also is nomex underwear needed or an option?

Sorry for all the questions but Im looking to get the ball rolling as the car is not a practical road car but supprised me how quick it was at the Gurston Down hillclimb school.

Many thanks
David

Hi David
Single layer suits are good for this year and next year!!!!
Helmet as you say
Gloves now mandatory spec to 6940
Boots are optional but definately adviseable
Nomex Underwear is also an option
Advice though is to geta s good as you can. It is not only a ggod investment but it is YOUR life
Otherwise Good Luck and have fun
Neville

The Inner wing modification may be a problem, the scrutineer will advise.
It may push you out of "modified" and in to sports libre where th car would not be competitive and would also require 6 point harness.

The helmet does not heed to be snell 2005, see recent posting on this forum for clarification.

Gloves, very controversial at the moment, but as you will be buying new ones, most available are FIA spec anyway.

No requirement for boots or underware however I would recommend both.

Proban suit is legal for this year, but for how long?

for definitive answers the blue book is available online http://www.msauk.org/site/cms/conten...p?category=528

Ask him what class he'd put you in with a 1310cc engine.

Hi David and wellcome to Hillclimbing.

I dont know if you have a Championship sorted out?

If you have a look at the www.hillclimbandsprint.co.uk website you will see they cater for "Newbies" with B licence's with 7 new competitors for this years Championship.

You can use their "Ask an expert" section to get clarification on your class.

bring the car up to the april meetings at gurston and during the day I am sure one of the scruts will come to the car park and go through the car with you.
If you need to find the scruts then come and find me and I will guide you to thier hiding spots.
Welcome to the world of hillclimb

fairly sure you will need steel wings/inner wings up to the front axle centre line [ unitary construction to be unmodified between the axle centres ] if you don't want to go into Sports Libre
Engine is fine as long as you don't exceed 1400cc - that would put you in Sports Libre
best of luck
Carl

Cut down inner wings on a Mini should be fine as they can't be cut back behind the axle centreline.

The front bulkhead of a Mini pretty much overhangs the axles so there's effectively half an inner wing left when they are chopped to incorporate brace bars.

I'd reckon the wee Mini is going to be fine in Modified with a few mods.
