Oil catch tank

Sorry I really am getting old a stupid.

Where in the Blue book does it say the rules about oil breather catch tanks ? I seem to remember reading something like unless the oil breather vents to the inlet manifold you must have a catch tank of (1 litre ?) and I think it even said something about the material. Have stared at the book this morning for some time and can’t find it mentioned anywhere.

For Hillclimb & Sprint vehicles:
Section (I) Para. 53 -
"53. Undertrays must be provided with drainage holes to prevent accumulation of liquids. Oil system catch tank capacity must be a minimum of 1 litre."

For "Car Racing" see Section G Paras 116 to 118

Ah yes, thank you, didn’t read past under trays. I thought there was a bit of text that specifically said a catch tank was only required if it breaths to atmosphere. I also thought it said something like the tank must be made of a translucent material and be easily removed. Must have dreamt all that as just looked in earlier books and can’t see it in them either.

Anyway, 1L plastic milk bottle it is then.

The bits you refer to are in the "race car" section

For "Car Racing" see Section G Paras 116 to 118

Whilst it is a great idea to get rid of accumalated petrol, IMO a bad idea to let oil escape in the event of a blow up. I had an engine let go at Curborough some 10 years ago in a car without undertray and the contents of the engine plus dry sump tank went onto the tarmac and took an hour to clear away. I had an engine let go in France a month ago and apart from a few wet fumes from the exhaust pipe, everything was contained in the undertray. I think the rules should be suitably altered to suit the type of car.

The important question that you haven't answered; was everything suitably contained in the underpants too, David?
