Our Correspondent & Eastwyke go to Brighton
I drove down to Chez Eastwyke in Old Coulsdon on Friday and the M25 lived up to its reputation as a car park from the M40 junction almost as far as Reigate.
Down to a couple of pubs in Eastwykes's fully licensed London Taxi then an evening of chewing over old times and eating a Chicken Balti followed. The following morning down to Brighton and the day started well as we blagged our way in for free. The conversation with the lady at the top of the stairs down to the paddock went like this. Eastwyke (waving one of my 2010 passes for a well known hill climb championship): "We're official love" Lady: "Do you pay?" Eastwyke in a very special firm tone of voice: "No" Our Correspondent "We don't pay to get in anywhere". A stroill around and a chat with Steve Miles then eventual BTD Mike Endean followed. Then to the Seagull cafe for breakfast which I paid for ![]() The day spent generally sauntering about and leaning over the ballustrade followed. Despite the patchy rain and drizzle we had a thoroughly good day enlivened by a run-in with a jobsworth on the way out after the event. Jobsworth at top of stairs: "You cant come out this way, its closed off. Eastwyke (dismantling the barriers): "Is it, just watch this". Our Correspondent (to jobsworth): "The events over. Use some common sense you stupid ***t". ![]() We spent most of the afternoon next to and chatting with Tony "Martlet" Steel and his mate. The commentary was amusing at times (there are as many as five of them) rather like our pals at Bouley Bay, only a lot less accurate. ![]() Apparently Rodney Thorne's MP43 once finished third in the 'hill climb championship' and a certain Mini with painted eyes instead of headlights is currently third in the 'hill climb championship'. One assumes they were talking about a local championship, but they didn't distinguish. All delivered in an entertaining way mind you. I look forward to going back again when the weather is better.

That is the most famous Pilbeam ever it won the British with a certain Martin Bolsover driving although it is Triggers Broom pilbeam. Cheers Rich

Dunno about Triggers broom.
More like the caretakers broom, 3 new heads and 5 new handles. Are there any of Bolsovers sports car records standing on the hills. I know that there were for a long time with his Loton record going a couple of years ago. |
