Pilbeam MP88/Cosworth (Twin Turbo)
I am pleased to see turbo engined cars are in the limelight.
I am just finishing a rebuild of the ex Griffiths/Harvey turboed Pilbeam MP53/04this was the double championship winning car in the 1980's. I had originally tried to buy this car in 1993 from John Garnett but was beaten to it by David Seaton, from whom I bought it 12 months ago. I hope the car will be out at the June Prescott subject to satisfactory testing. It is painted in the original yellow with the same Chase Web Offset and Komori decals as in period in the 1980's. Its original date of manufacture was 1984 and will therefore run in the Midland Championship pre 1985 class. The car was bought in boxes having sat for 10 years, although I must compliment David Seaton on keeping everything together which has made assembly much easier. Although it has been a lot of work I think it has been worth it as it is an iconic car which may have finished up being sold in bits. Barrie |

After an other long day in the workshop, (12hrs + my travel time there and back), temp repairs have been done to the front wing, (these will be delt with on a permanent basis mid season when we can get the wing/nosecone in to the composite shop), most of the day was spent going over the fuel system, paying attention to cleaning/flushing the injectors, and cleaning up the housings that they sit in on the pipework, one of which gave us many hours of fustration (leaking) but we beat it in the end, (I hope LOL).
With the traction control system now having been given a once over, ( one of the rear sensors mounting had broken, which has now been repaired, (fingers crossed), we now need to find out if the system was deactivated via the software, so fingers crossed we can verify this on saterday morning at shelsley, (can any one help, please). Then it was time to give the engine a run and check for any problems, and O boy did we find some, firstly the oil catch tank has a crack in it on the weld for the drain plug, (simple fix) being rewelded this week, the second find was the righthand turbo has decided the internal seals are no longer up to the job, so john is sourcing a seal kit this week. At this time we are still unaware of what boost we are running, all we now is that the wastegates are set at there lowest at this time, hope to have some idea by this w/e. Engine cover is progressing, having spoken to john about the cover used in the above photo, we have decided to modify the original cover, reason being there are now blow off valves fitted to the inlet pipes, therefore the cover would have become to flimsey due to the size of the cut out that would have been required, sure the mark 1 version wont be pleasing to the eye, so roll on the mark 2 version. A big thanks to Phil (Derbyshire) for coming up for the day, to Jan his wife, I hope you enjoy reading this, will keep you updated as to were we are at. A few more pic`s to follow. John, Phil, and John. Big thanks to Sandra for tea/coffee, sandwich and ice cream. Last edited by spd(john); 31-05-10 at 15:28. Reason: update |

Your Pilbeam.
I wonder why you guys don't ask either Mike Pilbeam or Mick ( Howlett ) as both of these more than helpful people have forgotten more than anyone else will ever know about PILBEAMS, surely its best to ask the people who designed and built the car. Mick is at most events and a good Pasty more than does the job for getting my questions answered.

A couple of photos of the Turbo setup for those that have not seen them. The inlet pipes/filters have been removed to enable to see the setup.

Interested to see how the car performs this week end. A lot of us know the car from Willems days. How did you meet John? Were you in the Young Farmers Club?
