Recomend me a Championship (again!)
HI,
I asked a very similar question a year ago and got some excellent advice. However, I decided to stay with my current championship (MGs) for another year but I am once again considering a change. I am look for as many of these as possible but realise that I probably won't be able to get them all: A mix of hills and sprints and several venues A few of the well known venues - Prescott / Harewood etc Use road tyres (1a prefered) as I will drive to and from events Ideally several people in my class to compete with, failing that, a system such as target times that gives me something to race against. A limited number of events to count (best 8 -10?) Several locations that are within 3 high speed hours or so of Norwich. This basically means Midlands and Leeds ish are ok and Gurston is just, but lots of events are too far west. My car is a bog standard Porsche Boxster 3.2S. I've done a few events in the past and it set similar times to a Morgan +8, an 80s 911, an MG ZT (the V8 one). I don't want to modify it at all. I have checked out a number of championships but I don't want to coment on them in case I influence recomendations. Also it is difficult to tell if there are many or any competitors in a particular class. Read last years mail again, nothing much has changed...
Standard car classes tend to be undersubscribed.
I know Mid Speed are doing a 2wd subset of 1C for 2012 with specific bogey times etc Might be worth a try, one of the regulars runs an RS Focus, i'm sure the boxster is up to the job. Cheers |

As you want to stick with 1A tyres the Midland Speed Championship would be a good bet as they have kept with 1As for roadgoing cars.

As 'geetee' says, Midland Speed will be good if you want to retain 1A tyres. But, HSA very good for those of us that live in the south-east, as there is plenty of choice. I have an MX-5, and can retain 1A tyres, but to be more competitive, you might need some 1B, in your class.
Alternative is to buy a cheap MX-5, and compete with like cars!!!!!!!!!!!! Whatever, enjoy yourself. |

Midland Speed have Lydden (twice) and Brands in the southeast and a little further afield have Goodwood, Wiscombe and Gurston. www.midlandspeed.org.uk |

Yes, geetee, I take your point, but Wiscombe is too far, for me.
The other problem is that I have a 1600 MX-5, which gives a serious disadvantage in the 2000 class, with the HSA, I am in a like for like situation. |

There should be plenty more to come from the MX5 records as Alan Mugglestone proved last year.

Thanks for all the replies so far.
My reading of the MSC rules is that you get 20 points for setting the fastest time in your class even if you are the only person in that class who has entered the event. Then you might get a bonus point if you are within 2% of the target. The MG championship I have competed in in the past the whole score is relative to the target which seems more fair to people in the other classes! With the MSC I think I would be in a class of very few, probably just me, in which case I would pitch up and set a time, collect my 20 points and see if I can get a bonus. At the end of the season I have 8 lots of 20 points and maybe a few bonuses too. There may be a really talented driver in a more popular class who keeps having top three finishes but at the end of the season I'd have more points. Is this right? |
