Roll Cages and Engine specs modified production

My son is preparing a Nova to run in Modified Production hillclimbs.
We know that a cage is mandatory for this class but the Blue book is not clear whether it has to be a proprietary (is Safety Devices) cage or a home fabricated one.
Also he is planning to use an original 1296 Nova engine. The Blue book states he needs to keep the original block as fitted to the production car, but can he fit a turbo and still run in modified? We do of ourse realise this will put him up a class on the equivalency factor.

Can anyone give guidance please?

Thanks
Richard

It is not clear in the Blue Book S 12.6.1 whether the equivalency factor is taken into account when determining "capacity class".

There is no definition within the Blue Book for "capacity class".

In 12.6.1 - the equivalency factor is not mentioned unlike 11.5.1 (road going) where the equivalency factor is specifically mentioned.

I find it odd that "category" regulations can stipulate "class" regulations where class capacities could be anything the event organisers decree (i.e. if there was a class of up to 2 litre then the car would be OK but if the smallest capacity class was up to 1400cc then the car would not comply).

They made Novas with 1.6 engines in so the only problem would be if there was a class for 1.0-1.6 and then another for 1.6-2.0......you have to fit into a class that your type of car would originally be eligible as I understand it. I fell foul a few years back with a 1.8 Metro. The biggest engine they ever put in a metro was a 1.4 so as soon as I entered an event where the capacity classes ran 1.0-1.4 and then 1.4-2.0 I was fired straight into Sports Libre! Its a bit silly really because you have to keep an original type engine so there isnt much advantage to be had out of it if they removed the clause.
Roll cages - AFAIK you just have to fit the regs, you can home build but you may be challenged to prove it is correct when you get your log book.

Just watch out for the front leg double bend problem if you're fab-ing it yourself Rich, you may need to put a reinforcing leg into it.

I believe the 1400-2000 modprod record at harewood is still that 1.4 turbo carbon elise that was built? If so, and if these regulations still stand, i see no reason why you couldnt run a 1.4t nova in 1400-2000 class as long as the original- type block regs are followed, and there was an original nova engine varient that would have been in the 1400-2000 class.

Surely a 1.4 turbo motor crosses into the 1400-2000cc class from sub 1400cc?
Nova SR 1.4 was 1389cc i.e. sub 1400cc therefore would fall foul of "the must remain in the same capacity class" rule if turbocharged.

As mentioned.....there was a 1.6 Nova. I cant be arsed to dig out the blue book now but it says something along the lines of remaining in the original capacity class for the model or option in the range.

So it seems to me that 1.0 turbo would be the way to go to remain in the under 1400cc class ?
