The padock area doesnt seem too bad - no mud seemed to be tracking onto the track from their - it was all from the area around the start line - if anything, a proper hardstanding & some drainage is all thats needed to improve things a great deal.
The other major issue at Scammonden is the lack of good viewing areas for supporters - its cold enough up there and that coupled with the fact that normally there is no butty van (cheers Huddersfield MC) and nowhere good to watch from / access to some corners is very poor - puts off a lot of people wanting to visit for a day out. RE: Dennis Doyle's website - i used to read that years before i got into the sport - is a very interesting website. Speaking on resurrecting local hillclimbs - its a shame the Baitings Reservoir (not far from Scammonden) is not still running. (i think it may still be for motorbike hillclimbs). That was the first hillclimb i ever saw. Looks like an interesting track and there is a perfect view of the entire course from up on the top of the dam. |

At lunch I walked along the path next to the motorway and from that you got a great view of most of the course just from a distance.

On my first visit to Scammonden back in the 1970s viewing was fantastic as there were hardly any trees to obstruct the view. Basically now you have to wander down to the last corner and then traverse the hillside to the next to last corner for any decent public viewing areas. I have seen a few hardy souls on the outside of the first corner but it one heck of a hike back up to the Paddock.
Baitings Dam is a sorry tale. First of all the Water Board parked lots of trucks on the hill and caused a lot of damage to the track surface. Then the track license was allowed to lapse and it will now take a fortune to get the track up to the new requirements.

Glad to see you had a good day guys, sorry i couldn't join you in the finish due to other work commitments. Well done Rod and the team at Pendle for running the event with a limited entry, hope it gives us something to base off next season. Re all your comments about conditions at the venue, as stated you realy did see it at it's worst this time of year, the paddock and start area drainage is about as good as it can be when you study the geo of the area, ask Stuart, there realy is part of him in there!! Re Baitings Dam, this is also owned by Yorkshire water and a few years ago the licence holders were given the option of one venue or the other and with Scammonden having the better surface at that time this was the choice. Hopefully we can get some work party's early next year to improve a few things.
