Scammonden Today

Bit of a farce.

Timing gear broken and whilst they tried to fix it, all the practice runs were untimed.

After 2 practice runs they still coundt fix it. called an early lunch, and finally at around 14:30 told us they couldnt fix it. They offered either a full refund if you were to leave then, or 50% if you decided to carry on with untimed / uncompetitive rounds.

Im not slating the guys out there trying to fix it, or the marshals etc, but i think after that poor do its a bit much to ask for 50% of your entry fee for you to have some untimed runs. At the very least, let everyone have one more free run first. As everyone had really taken it easy on the practice runs.

Lukily im local, i know there was one bloke who had travelled up from Cambridge last night and slept in his car up on the moors!

We usually put our clock builder in a box until he has repaired it or built another one whilst cramming in burgers through a slot. It generally works.

Thirty something pounds for track day would still be cheap.
I expect the club were probably loosing money on the event anyway given the small entry, the offer to carry on with offering more runs was sensible, some would have packed up and not given the oppertunity for drivers to enjoy the course.

Yes, most took it very easy on the untimed practice, but I think that was more to do with the greasy wet track than the lack of timing. The fact that the track had dried out and the sun shining by the time to give up just added to the dissapointment...

Not wanting to risk the car before the Nat Sprint at Kames I packed up in the heat of the sun and joined the stationary traffic down the M1.

Yes it was very disappointing but I thought the club handled it very well considering.

Apparently the timing gear worked when connected close to the bottom of the hill, but not when the signal went through the underground cable. There was electrical connectivity but either not enough ornot of the right sort to trigger the timing. Short of getting 500 metres of the right sort of cable on Sunday lunchtime I'm not sure what else they could have done.

I imagine the club lost a couple of thousand quid (United Utilities are unlikely to offer a refund) & they are only unpaid enthusiasts providing a service to other enthusiasts.

Those I spoke who did the afternoon "fun runs", including Bob from Cambridge & Glyn who had travelled 100 miles & got unofficial BTDBTDBTD, enjoyed themselves. Sure, it's not the real thing, & I understand why most chose not to, but I reckoned it was worth it to experience a dry Scammonden for the first time in my current car. I even managed a little sunburn - not bad for Yorkshire in July.

Just hoping it doesn't put off people running or entering future events there.

I'm dissapointed that they didn't bother send me a set of regs and an entry form after asking twice.

I just assumed that as they hadn't they had called the event off. Shame as I would have loved to have gone there again.

I have set up an e-mail address to try and circulate reg's for all events at this venue, this is of course dependant on organising clubs making them available to me.
If you drop me a mail at scamm.hill@hotmail.co.uk with the e-mail address you want them sent to i will add you to my mailing list, and don't worry there will be no spam off the back of this.
