Re. being sensible, if you want to ban something, with immediate effect possibly to save lives, then differentiating between RON ratings might be a tad daft?

Yes the "ban" (& I've absolutely no idea who suggested it) wasn't terribly useful as anyone can get their hands on petrol without filling Gerry cans. However I wouldn't say whoever made that decision made a bad one given the circumstances.

The way around it is to leave the jerry cans in the boot of the car when you fill them up. Therefore you are filling the car up.
