Standard cars dont...they have a carb that sits on top of the exhaust manifold. That is a banana manifold for side draught 40 carbs.....its designed to assist performance by facing the carb to the cold side of the bay. What you need to remember is that most other non x-flow engines wont be in the back of the car where airflow is limited.

Yes they did. A 16 valve Skoda is very common.

Not until after 1999 they didnt. Snotty is a 1977 Estelle! The type of engine in question (which survived in 8 port form until 2001!) started its production run in the 60s and never received a 16v head.
