Talking

As much as there is a lot of variety in the cars over here, you guys in Eurodisneyland really do know how to do hillclimbing . Its a shame the government over here wont allow hillclimbs on the road too, the roads you guys drive on look awesome and ultra scary!

Out of interest, where do guys like you and the late departed George Plasa get your funding from?

Err, it's all over the car.....It's called sponsorship. European motorsport is so differant from the UK, The firms involved in motorsport have seen the opportunity to get something out of it and so put something into it. You have to go across and see an event to see what it is all about.....

I’m sure RedT is absolutely correct, sponsorship is where the money comes from. However, whether you think it’s a good idea or not depends on where you are coming from:

If you want to watch it, then you probably will see more fabulous, highly-developed cars in the short term. But, take it too far, e.g. letting Bernie run it, & you might find a top-flight world hillclimb event costing about the same as FI – e.g. a few hundred quid for a weekend?

If you want to do it, then sponsorship might initially look like a way of defraying costs. Alternatively, you might find that the competition, some of whom will be better connected & better at getting sponsorship than you are, will be that much further ahead. If you are doing it as a pure hobby, maybe you don’t really want to do the “networking”, presentations & all the other crap that makes up getting sponsorship in the world of work & for which those who can do it earn loadamoney?

Is commercialization a good idea? – discuss

Absloutely, you are right when you say that too much commercialization is not good for the sport at all. That is right , but as long as it stays on a low level it is ok and also provides the sport.

it is also right when you say that many firms are involved in the hillcimb sport here, but the newspapers, tv stations and so on don't even realize the sport .
In some regions in Austria everyone knows the sport, and that is where the sponsoring concern come from !
But in areas like vienna, nearlly nobody knows that this sport is existing..

BUT the important thing is :
When you decide to build a touring car on a very high level, such as our BMW 320 IRL, you just don't have another possibility, because as a few private people like our Team you don't have the money to build such a hillclimb car!
