I havn't read all this thread, but i've just been through the whole thing myself.

We had an A4 2 litre deisel (FWD) and towed fantastic, just always worried at getting stuck in Prescott/shels paddock/trailer park.
Then had a Subaru Legacy, 4x4 2 litre petrol, both estates.

Legacy was slower but far more rear room and 4x4 was fantastic.
At 68K miles if felt tired, so we have just changed it.

We looked and fancies a Skoda, the thinking mans VW.Audi.

Found a Scout 2 litr petrol, 4x4. Boring to look at to say the least and too small (after the Legacy).
Could not find a Superb 4x4 anywhere which was ideal.

Bumped into a Vauxhall Insignia, 4x4 2 litre turbo (220bhp) estate with some nice gismos at low miles, good price and drives really well (it is my daily commuter too).

Bought it, added a Witter bar and is brilliant and a bit too fast and stable as it creeps up the speedo in 6th. I now use the cruise control as much as possible.

Great all rounder and looks to me a good buy.

It has Flex Ride where the more spirited you drive the suspension stiffens up and on motorways sets to touring.
The 4x4 only kicks-in when the going gets slippy otherwise mainly FWD for economy on tyres.
Auto headlamps and auto wipers irritate and the 1st to 2nd gear change is an acquired taste but I'm getting better at it.

I tow a light Lola sports racer and a wide BJ trailer, about 1200Kg all up. It has a capacity of 1.8Tons to tow braked.

Hope this helps.

I use a base model Skoda Octavia diesel (about 105 hp max) saloon. The huge boot takes a full set of wet weather wheels and tyres, jack and all equipment.
Trailer and competiton car weigh 860 kg. The Skoda tows it so easily that it is easy to forget that the trailer is there. I get around 40 mpg when towing.
Easily the best tow-car I have ever owned.
