motivation

I really hope it stays close as I'd like the extra motivation to go back to Doune and for the final Loton to play a part.[/QUOTE]

All that glisters is not golden sadly. The 'cheap' deals don't allow for heavy data use, once your monthly bandwidth allocation is up thats it and these prices are for fixed dishes not for ones that are in a different location every time they go out on a job. The install isn't five minutes either.

Its a VSAT for broadband via satellite running on Hellas satellite with its down link in Germany. Plug your PC into it and off you go, David. You might baulk at the running costs though.
Sounds very Star Wars to me. Is this something the Military would use.........

Thankfully I don't need heavy usage just something more reliable than a mobile and a bit faster than GPRS. Beyondsl looks ok other than mobile dishes are expensive - BGAN bases look better physically but the bandwidth prices are higher.

Got the T Shirt, forgot it clashed with my last Shelsley. Will miss Doune, it may be the decider, but what with weddings and a new boss, I'll definately be there next year.

Beyonds is the Astra 2 package and is OK for light use by people who live in the sticks but even then its flakey. Also sliding speed scale, low transfer rates and woeful download limits.. Their max up speed is 256k. Dependent on which of the 2 we use our upoads are either 2 meg or 1 meg.
The Astra 2 or Eurotel offerings are designed for permanent installation as not only do VSATs have to see the bird with the correct azimuth and elevation they have to align with the correct panel antenna so as they do not 'squint' across other users lines. These come preprogammed with your grid references nominated at time of ordering. Not much use for attaching to your motorhome for use around the UK.

My friend Mary J in France had one of those Beyonds set-ups.

It was so successful she told me the other day that she is using it as a Wok to cook supper.
