Part 1 of The Ladybird Book of - Things to Make and Do with “wet string”:

If you’ll excuse a back-of fag-packet calculation…

1 A single run could be described, in terms of results, in 100 characters (bytes).
2 May I pretend that’s 1000 bits? (forgive me - I’m working on a fag packet).
3 Let’s say your venue is pretty damn good & can get a car up every 20 seconds.
4 Does that mean you need an upload bandwidth of 1000/20, i.e. 50 bits per second?

It’s quite possible that I am indeed taking the piss.

Congratulation Dennis you have won 1st prize. Please collect your brand new 14k modem from Hasta in the timing hut at Loton this weekend.

Acording to the Usage monitor it's about 5MB for a days meeting

If the poor old start line crew can manage 500 starts, I guess we must get 10,000 bytes apiece per run to reach 5MB. Think of how many racing driver’s excuses we could fit in the spare 9,900?

I write with the authority of one who helped program the original traffic warning messages on the M25. So, if you are ever troubled by a message like “warning fag ahead”, it could just be one of my originals still circulating looking for its final destination.

However, I take your point & have no problem in grovelling in order to get a time, any time, just not a DNF.

See you on Saturday.

In nearly 30 years of timing, I've never been asked to do that (at least, not for a competitor's own runs ).

Can it be done and how much does it cost per car
Allan
