Wishing to get back into hill/sprints

Hi all,

I am looking for some general advice. I built a "Locost" 7 and hillclimbed it in 2003/4 in the ASWMC championship. I "competed" in B3 (road legal kit car big engine class) but now I'm concerned that I can no longer enter this class as I have started to read the '11 Blue book. I wish to compete next year in the East Anglia area.

My car is not a 'book' build Locost. Double wishbones all round. Pushrod front end. 2.8 Cologne V6. Flat bottomed chassis with diffuser.

At the time, the blue book allowed silhouette freedom below the axle line and shock positioning was free. It was tenuous, but seeing as I tended to bring the rear of the class up nobody objected to me being in B3.

Q 1, Am I relegated to being in mod prod?
Q 2, If in mod prod, can I run slicks on a road legal car with DVLA logbook and electrics?
Q 3, There appears to be requirements for electrical cut-off switch - can I use the longacre 4 pole switch or do I have to fit an FIA approved switch?
Q 4, will my rollcage (which passed scrutineering 8years ago in B3) be ok for mod prod?
Q 5, I see in the Blue book lots of requirements for seats mounting plates. My car doesn't have seats, two bits of 1" thick foam - one as backrest and one as an RS rest. Do I still need 3mm steel plate?

Thankyou,
Glen.

Q1 Probably Modified Specialist Production?
Q2 As long as you get a MSA Logbook you can run slicks, otherwise the car would need to run in fully road legal condition. Also as it is over 2 litre to run non road legal you will require a "Nat A" licence.
Q3 FIA approval not required, but don't know the operation on the longacre
Q4 Could ok for Mod, unlikely to meet Sports Libre rules.
Q5 No, however something better than a thin layer of aluminium would be recommended having seen rocks easily rip throgh the floor of mr old single seater

However, best to call a local scrutineer to confirm, details in the blue book, they could also arrange for the Log book for a small fee.
Contact your local club and regional association for the regs of the events/championship you are likely to want to enter, they will have an eligibility scrutineer who will be the best to help.

Unfortunately you can only run in Modified Specialist Production if the chassis was produced by a manufacturer in quantities greater than 20 in 12 consecutive months. This could be a problem if your chassis was home made.

You also now need to have a head restraint fitted.
10.1.13. Head restraints (K.13): mandatory for all cars
except for cars of Periods A – E

Thanks guys. Very helpful. I guess there is some good and bad news in their. I think I will join my local club and see if they can track me down the number of a friendly scrutineer in the new year. In the past I have turned up to a speed event in advance and ask for a mock scrutineeering.

Regarding the answer to my Q2. I had a nasty feeling I had to surrender my DVLA logbook if I wanted to obtain an MSA logbook?

Regarding 20 chassis constructed. I agree. In the past people turned a blind eye to it as all locost were homemade. Mind, my chassis isn't really a locost as fitting DW rear suspension required a different chassis layout.

Headrests. I had some of Demon Tweeks rollcage foam padding on the diag cross bar of the roll cage at head height. This used to work, have they become more fussy? I guess I could make a steel frame from the top of the chassis.

Thanks for all the help.
Glen.

No you retain your DVLA logbook but might have to have the car on SORN if you do not insure & tax it for the road. I had my road legal Lotus Elan logbooked by one of the Northern MSA Scrutineers. It did save a lot of bother at events as (a) I didn't have to take the insurance certificates etc with me, and (b) scrutineering took a lot less time. Plus I was still able to run it on the road prior to events just to blow off the cobwebs.

Glen, it sounds to me like it will be in sports libra? That's not the end of the world as you can do just about whatever you want and we are a nice bunch, honest.

LOL. Aye, but I have a 150hp car weighing 700kgs with no slicks and no wings. I'll be Billy slow mates!

Do I not need a proper roll cage to be in sports libre..... ? Grrr, we'll see.

Thanks though,
Glen.

I really don't think you would have a problem regarding the 20 units per 12 months, there are many Locost's out their and I certainly wouldn't like to try and prove that less than 20 were built in any 12 month period.

At the end of the day it's no different to buying a chassis kit from any of the other manufacturers and building it at home.
