Black Bag the Faithful Border Clubmans F1300

Hello all, I thought it was worth starting a thread on this lovely 1300 clubmans.
Here's as it came to me...

I then embarked on a thorough bit of cleaning and treatment...

I'm afraid the pinky/red/purple wings had to go, my first thought was to remove the black but it's been too well applied so after a sensible suggestion it's got a new colour scheme. Some cheerful fibreglassing was done to repair the wings.

So with paint finished, an "open" engine bay more in keeping with a 70s clubmans it was looking good. A whole day was lost re engineering the clutch mechanism which is now lovely, smooth and back to a cable.

Corner weights and geometry is all done, brakes have been checked and gone through. Oil change is about all that's left and it's time to get out and have a drive again!

I'd like to make this thread open to everyone who has knowledge and photos of this car, it would be great to get it's story altogether in one place so post away!

Sam

It is great to see this project being worked on and going be run again in yet another owner's hands, rather than broken for parts. Like probably many on here - who had not already - I was tempted to do the same when recently advertised from a certain emporium.

Cheers
Mike

PS like the fond name - a great 1980s 'Viz' reference, particularly as you have now ditched the San and Tray gaudy pink bits.

Cheers! Thanks for your comments, it's good to know people have read the thread!

I'll return it's official name to the original initials, Black Bag is it's nickname, overall it feels like there's a good an happy car in there, it's just been ridden hard and left out in the rain a few times

Here's it's potted history:

I may be able to shed some light on the possible history of Hannah's car.
Fred Burbery raced a very basic homebuilt F1300 car in the 1960s and early 1970s. The car was not very fast, but he was an outstanding driver.
In the early 1980s Fred built another car, very similar to a Mallock. He was a skilled craftsman, so the welding etc would have been of high quality. I am sure that he used square tube for the chassis.
From the Youtube pictures it looks as if it might be Fred's car (known as the FTB). One big clue is that, very unusually in F1300, he used a Triumph gearbox.
Serious illness prevented Fred from using the car very often, and he sold it about 20-25 years ago.
I still have indirect contact with Fred, and would be glad to pass on any enquiries.

jolibre will become famous soon enough
I bought the car from Fred in the late 90s,stripped and rebuilt it,re panelled it and did sprints and hillclimbs here in the north with it until it burnt a piston at Harewood ,it got stripped down again and stood under tarpaulins for about 5 yrs until Philip Major bought it ,he rebuilt it but don't think he actually competed it then he sold it to Dermot .

Ah great to know. So that will be when I first saw it for sale with Dermot as the JLS? After that I assume it went to Ben240z and on to Rustyracer.

If anyone does have any photos of it please do let me know, it'd be brilliant to get some through it's life.

Thanks

Sam
