2014 Rd 1 - Castle Combe

Despite the strong winds the feared rain did appear but it had minimal affect. In general the weather was excellent for the time of year, sunny and bright most of the time but when the sun went in the temperatures plummeted.
Some great class battles and a super Top 12 Run-off. A big thank you to the organising club and the hard working marshals.
On track there were lots of incidents with broken throttle cables, electrical failures and spins. Results will be posted shortly.

Missing In Action

Several drivers missed the opportunity of an early season exercise session. . Notable amongst those were John Graham, who is the new keeper of the ex-Simon Durling/Karl Davison Gould GR55B; Nick Algar, with the ex-Musson Force, and Karl Ramsden in his Radical.

Mike Manning was a non-starter in his Ford Puma. After work had been completed on the engine Mike found that the alterations meant that it needed new engine mounts which had to be fabricated. As time was running out he scratched at the 11th hour.

It was cold enough to freeze the chuff off a penguin on the pit wall. It gave me an earache and I had to seek refuge in the warm.

Good event though.

RWDKurt is on a distinguished road
Hoping to be out for the next round at Croft Steve - a few issues to resolve first. Glad the event went well and with less snow than last year!

Round One of the SBD Motorsport British Sprint Championship was run in bright spring weather although spots of rain fell and it was bitterly cold. On track the problems from past years that have troubled the Calder’s at Combe were banished although their ‘electronic dash’ failed this time so they were driving ‘blind’.
Colin Calder qualified fastest so held the best position running last and after the first run he held a slender lead with daughter Heather second. On her second run Heather was electrifying as she carved over a second off her father’s time to lead, Colin now had it all to do. Off the line he was two tenths up and at the split he led by over a second. Through Camp on his flying lap he was stunning and left a trail of sparks all the way to Quarry. As he charged through the line the question on everyone’s lips was had he beaten his daughter? With just 0.14 in hand the victory went to Colin Calder but both he and Heather were inside the outright course record – “The extra points could be vital for both of us at the end of the season.” was Colin’s reaction.
The top 2 litre runner was again Mark Smith but he had co-driver Craig Sampson snapping at his heels. Smith took third place and was inside the old two litre record on both his Top 12 runs. Sampson wasn’t that far behind as he also put in a run inside the old record. Graham Porrett took fifth spot despite having troubles with the rear wing delaminating. Hasty repairs had to be checked by the scrutineer which meant co-driver Terry Holmes, last year’s Combe winner, missed his first ‘Top 12’ run. On his one and only run Holmes was looking good for third spot only to have the battery short out.
Terry Graves debuted his ‘new’ Gould and despite only having the same ratios used in hillclimbing by Rob Turnbull he qualified ninth. With such a large handicap Graves only took one run yet still moved up to eighth. New higher ratios are urgently needed to make the most of the new car. Steve Broughton and Matt Hillam both qualified Hillam’s Dallara and scored well with the smartly turned out ex-F3 car. The final points were picked up by Tony Jarvis who had the throttle cable snap on run one.
