asklepios is on a distinguished road
Renny, thanks for agreeing with my amateur interpretation. Any thought on my second point on "manufacturer"? Perhaps if the battery is contained in a can of worms it will be OK.

What happens if my single seater comes with a gel battery as a standard fitment - ie as supplied by the constructor ?

You watch, it will only apply to Sprints and Hillclimbs because everyone else while tell them to do one. Like ROPS and the rest of the nonsense.

Technology has moved on considerably since then and the modern batteries sold by the likes of Mini-Evo Allan are a different breed - and well proven in lots of cars.

I would be more worried about the quality of installation / fitment of folk's batteries long before being concerned about the type of chemistry used in the cells.

The MSA really need to do some proper risk analysis and detailed research before coming up with these knee-jerk reaction rules........
proper risk analysis and detailed research.....by the MSA...funniest thing i've heard all week, as for knee jerk reactions they will be making them mandatory from 2020 with a sticker costing a fiver a pop

Gel or AGM batteries are lead/acid hence this rule doesn't apply. The rule says non lead/acid which in essence means lithium as I'm not aware of anything else being available.

Then it's a "Standard Part" so no problem (it will have to be CE marked anyway for sale in Europe).
