Have now got the transmission sorted including a "Dog Clutch" allowing the engine/CVT drive to be disconnected to conduct the static noise test. Finally found an ignition system providing 8 sparks per engine revolution. Using two V8 four stroke units each with a sensor (set 45 degrees apart).

Work progressed last few weeks, the two radiators, in series for coolest outlet temp., are located and front end just about completed. Rear end suspension A frames & top links completed - CVT primary pulley, ignition trigger wheel, starter ring, alternator drive pulley all fitted to the cut about original flywheel ready to complete crank assembly so I can get it re-balanced. The V8 now positioned within chassis so starting the fabrication of the chassis mountings.

Just manufactured the exhaust & silencing system. The engine is positioned so that the exhaust outlet points to the passenger area inside the car. Could not instal engine other way around as I need to get the crank drive at the rear of the car. This two stoke engine has cast in "Expansion Chambers" with a 24 sq.inch (155 sq.cm.) outlet which then reduces to 14 sq.inch (90 sq.cm.) before it normally exits, under the water, for silencing. So I have emulated this design with a 180 degree rectangular "Box" exhaust leading into a rectangular exhaust(muffler) using a perforated centre section in a 10" square box. All of this will be encased into a fully noise insulated area where its "roof" will allow driver exit through the passenger door, i.e. MSA regs. compliant. The final outlet(s) are 4 x 2" diameter pipes exiting alongside the rear wheel. Current open exhaust is 145 db - I hopethat it works to achieve around 108db. Plywood engine mounts temporary until drive/transmission sorted.

Progress

Lots of kw of heating used during the last few weeks in the workshop but good progress now that I have accumulated all the parts for the rear end. The crankshaft position is now fixed which locates the CVT transmission which in turn fixes the Sierra differential location giving the final position for the drive shafts. I now need to extend the wheelbase by about 75mm to get everything in line. Thats a major part of the project resolved. Looks like I will have to "Spark erode" the hardened dog tooth clutch to get it to bolt onto the diff drive flange. The front of the engine now protrudes into the driver-passenger area so that I have had to construct a new bulkhead - hopefully acceptable to the scrutineers?. The engine location has dictated a move sideways for the drivers seat - at least the exhaust will keep him warm! Now awaiting a delivery from Australia of the new ignition system. Its a capacitor discharge type for 8 cylinders which I can fire using 8 Hall sensors located on a circular plate around the crankshaft. This plate is rotated relative to the engine RPM. On a two stoke, ignition timing is 4 degrees at startup, rising to 16 degrees at 3500 and keeps there to max RPM.
Engine assembly is underway. Just purchased a lathe so I am going to have a go at spinning the 8 carb inlet trumpets. £10 for the material. Shop prices about £20 each x 8 !!
1st planned event at Snetterton sprint now delayed until June so hopefully will be there.

that's a Darrian centre section and doors grafted onto a spaceframe chassis?

Yes and its bonded onto a Prosport 3000 chassis circa 1995.

Is that pre-fabricated so you just attach it to the engine?
