Badly prepared

So this old single seater car turns up on Friday evening at Snetterton, and the owner sets about unloading it and we get chatting. He's not done any Motorsport sports for 30 years and he acquired a lovely little formula Renault, last raced a very long time ago, and he was so looking forward to getting out and doing his very first Sprint.

About an hour or so later, we spot that his seat belts are dated 2005.

Then panic sets in as we explain there's no way he's going to pass scrutineering in the morning with belts that old. So he went over to the F3 cup teams to see what he can find. Luckily he obtained a set, and PeteG helped him fit them. Then we start thinking and we ask, does he have a ROPS, or even a log book?

A what? He had neither. And his race suit, out of date but we can lend him a set. His helmet seemed ok, and he'd bought new gloves.

And on Saturday, he was scrutineered and was allowed to compete and he had the biggest smile all day.

So it goes to show, common sense, and some support from people around you, there's not much that can stop you getting out. And he will be back, better prepared and faster. He might have new slicks too

Nice one... respect to all those who helped out!
Sounds like the Blue Book went in the bin when the licence arrived.
Makes you wonder if the car has even been spanner-checked.
Someone owes you a pint.

And here is the man and car themselves just recovering from a spin in the slightly greasy conditions. As well as being in Martini colours I believe it was also a Martini chassis.

Great story, and lovely that people are prepared to help out. Looking forward to getting my car finished and running, nice to know that there are people with that kind of community spirit!

The scrutineer was really helpful, as after all the runs had been completed he came back and went through everything with the competitor referring him to the relevant sections of the blue book, and leaving him a comprehensive list of items requiring attention before his next meeting. A sensible approach, although it does raise the question as to why the competitor had not looked at the blue book before the meeting!

I also found the scrutineers to be knowledgeable and very helpful when I was doing the Snetterton 300 a few weeks back. Much appreciated.

Good to hear he got to race.

And I bet those old harnesses would still have held in an elephant if they had needed to.
