When Do You Know Slicks Are Past It?

The A15's on my Lola are in their 3rd year, 10 events a year.

I have been quicker this year than ever mainly because the car is better and I'm more comfortable in it, but I wonder when you know the slicks are past their best?

Car corners, brakes etc well and still look 'black' as opposed to purple.
I have never shaved/surformed them and don't intend to start that game so they have a lot of depth to them.

I wrap them over winter with the usual black film with the car jacked up and pressurised.

I'm not competitive enough to do new slicks 2 x a year etc, I'm here for fun and PB's.

It's a sweeping statement but if they've done 30 events they are likely to be knackered.
Some folk do sell part worn slicks on here occasionally so you could go that route or bite the bullet and buy a new set and eek those out for another 3 years ??

Way past their best, you won't believe the difference.

Something akin to driving on ice. I find they change very quickly.

On 10 events per year, fit a new set at the begining of the season and cut the previous year's for wets or inters. If you use them for too long you could well be driving better but not going any faster as the tyres gradually loose their grip..............

On the Radical I could feel the difference between 1 year old tyres and the new ones. For a couple of seasons I ran the two sets split for practice and competition so had back to back comparison.

If you decide to splash out you will the amazed at the difference (after the first gentle run to clean the surface).

If you dont spash out then I recommend skiming, scrubing the tyres to clean off the dead rubber. I know you don't want the effort every event, but even just the once before the new season may help bring back the life.

New and last used it twice in 2012 ( F3 Dallara alloy). it's a Avon radial soft tyre. Very well wrapped up with farm baler clingfilm and left in the dark loft for 7 years. How's good is that?

A bit like if you avoided the sun for 7 years and took no alcohol or nicotine. So, better than might have been , but you would still have aged.

As a very 'B' list competitor with an old single seater, I find a new set of A15 8s and 10s last 2 seasons - about 60 events. Yes, year 2 and the 64 times start to fall off so I need to spin up, where allowed, the car still feeling safe although not so sharp. I dont bother about cleaning but wrap in film and store in the cellar during the winter. And yes, old covers will always find a new home!

You will know when your tyres start feeling nasty, particularly early season when it's cold and moist and miserable. Mid summer, when the sun is relentlessly beating down, even the oldest and nastiest of tyres are bearable!
